While it contained a full story within itself, it felt like a shorter one than the previous book. The book was a shorter novel than I expected after reading The Cruel Prince. Black lives up to her genre’s brutality more than other authors in the genre. Just like you would expect a faerie world to be. The book was focused on Jude, but the world around her is brutal and conniving. What I appreciate about Black’s writing is that she is able to go deeper into Jude’s story without sacrificing the quality of the world she is building around Jude. Why I liked The Wicked King by Holly Black “Power is much easier to acquire than it is to hold on to.” With the Queen of the Sea growing as a threat and Jude’s own family working against her she must find a way to continue the balance of the deal she struck and keep control of faerie. Jude Duarte, seneschal to the High King, holds all of the power in their relationship but still has to play the games of the faerie court. The book picks up a few months after the action of The Cruel Prince and things in Faerie are not all that they seem. The Wicked King by Holly Black is the follow up to The Cruel Prince we have been waiting for. The Wicked King by Holly Black Rating – 3.75 out of 5
